Sizing and Fitting Rope Halters
How to measure your horse for the right rope halter fit
Rope halters are not just some fun colourful accessory, they are actual
trainingtools to help communicate with your horse. When used wrong or when
using the wrong size you can seriously hurt or injure your horse. So ordering
the right size and knowing how to fit it properly is very important!
Noseband
The noseband is measured across the bridge of the nose, about the width of a finger in between the knots and the point of the cheekbone.
We include the knots in our measurements so the length is the same for all variations like our knotless rope halters without nose knots, or XL rope halters with thicker rope and bigger knots.
* This measurement should determine the size your horse needs. If the rest of your measurements fit a different size better or are all over the place please contact us for help or a custom size order!
Nose circumference
You measure the circumference of the nose at the same height you measure the noseband, but in a circle all along the nose.
Keep your measuringtape a little snug and add 2,5cm/1 inch extra to your result. This is the minimum circumference your halter needs, so the number in our chart needs to be bigger than your horse's nose circumference.
*If your nose circumference is bigger than the matching size of the noseband in our chart do not order a size up but contact us for custom sizing.
* If your measurement is so small it fits in a smaller size than your noseband size you also may need to order a custom size, do not size down or the nose knots will add pressure in the wrong spot.
Cheek length
The cheek length is measured along the cheeckbone and should come to about the TMJ (the boney bit between the eye and the ear). The throat/jaw ropes will angle the cheek ropes down so they won't hurt the eyes.
Throat/Jaw
Because of the shape of the jaws the throat strap usually needs to be the same size as the cheeks. Some horses though have very wide jaws, think Quarter Horses, Cob's, stallions and may need some extra length for their wide jaws.
The throat ropes are ideally hooked behind the jawbone but we have adjusted our proportions in a way that this is not a requirement without it interfering with the fit or impact of the rope halter. As long as the knots stay within the upper quarter of the jaws your halter will work as intended.
Gullet
The gullet is the part below the jaw, measured between the throat and the part where you measured the nose circumference. We like to keep this part a bit on the shorter side so even when the halter is not fitted perfectly the loops where your lead rope attaches will not hang too low interfering with your aides.
Crown
The crown piece is the part that goes behind the ears and ties the halter. It is measured from the jaw knots, for in indication of how long it needs to be measure from about halfway on the jaw behind the ears to the other side. Add about 20cm (8inches) to make the tie.
When your horse has a very long or wide you my need an extra long crownpiece.
If the crownpiece is too long you can cut of the acces and burn the ends to keep from fraying.
When tied you the end sticking out should not be able to reach the horse's eye for obvious safety reasons! You can als tuck the long end under the throat strap but we recommend cutting to to size if it's too long and only used on the one horse.
Loops
The loops at the bottom of the jaw where you attach your lead rope are 5cm (2inches) tall, the same goes for the loop where you attach the crownpiece.
If you want to use your rope halter for riding you may need your loops a bit longer to fit the mecate better.
For groundwork we prefer to keep the shorter so there's less noise for your aides.
When choosing a rope halter with a ring option the ring will have a diameter of 3cm (1.18 inches).
